Executive Summary

This is a DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Adobe Experience Manager. An attacker can manipulate the Document Object Model (DOM) to inject and execute malicious JavaScript in a victim's browser. The attack requires user interaction, as the victim must visit a specially crafted webpage.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this DOM-based XSS vulnerability typically involves inspecting web application code for improper handling of user input in the DOM. Use browser developer tools to monitor DOM changes and look for suspicious JavaScript execution. Tools like OWASP ZAP or Burp Suite can help identify such issues by analyzing client-side scripts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive information like session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of the user. Since it requires user interaction, the risk depends on whether users visit untrusted or compromised webpages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health information privacy) if sensitive data is exposed. Organizations must address it to maintain compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate this vulnerability, ensure all user-supplied input is properly sanitized and validated before being rendered in the DOM. Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict inline script execution. Update Adobe Experience Manager to the latest patched version as soon as possible.
