Description

The ThumbPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized access in versions up to and including 6.2.1. This is due to missing capability checks and nonce verification in the send_deactivation_survey() function registered via the wp_ajax_pl-plugin-deactivation AJAX action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to deactivate the ThumbPress plugin on the affected site by sending a crafted POST request to admin-ajax.

Executive Summary

The ThumbPress WordPress plugin up to version 6.2.1 has a vulnerability due to missing capability checks and nonce verification in the send_deactivation_survey() function. This flaw allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher to deactivate the plugin by sending a specially crafted POST request to admin-ajax.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the ThumbPress plugin version 6.2.1 or lower. Look for unauthorized deactivation attempts in server logs by searching for POST requests to admin-ajax.php with the wp_ajax_pl-plugin-deactivation action.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could deactivate the ThumbPress plugin on your WordPress site, potentially disrupting functionality that relies on it. This could lead to loss of features, broken site elements, or other operational issues depending on how the plugin is used.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access to deactivate the ThumbPress plugin. While it does not directly expose sensitive data, unauthorized plugin deactivation could disrupt security controls or logging mechanisms, potentially impacting compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA that require continuous monitoring and protection of personal data.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the ThumbPress plugin to the latest version if available.
  • Remove or disable the ThumbPress plugin if no update is available.
  • Review user roles and permissions to ensure only necessary access is granted.
