Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in Netcore NR255-V version 1.5.130703. It occurs in reboot_timer_set.cgi due to improper parsing of input tokens by sscanf. Attackers can exploit this by sending specially crafted input to the affected endpoint, which corrupts stack memory and may allow arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the presence of Netcore NR255-V version 1.5.130703 or vulnerable endpoints. Inspect network traffic for requests to reboot_timer_set.cgi with unusually long input parameters. Use tools like curl to probe the endpoint: curl -v http://<target-ip>/reboot_timer_set.cgi?input=<long-string>. Monitor for crashes or unexpected behavior in the device logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code on the device, potentially gaining control over it. This may lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or disruption of device functionality. Systems using the vulnerable version are at risk if exposed to untrusted networks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to its ability to allow unauthorized memory corruption, which may lead to data breaches or unauthorized access to sensitive information. However, specific compliance impacts depend on the system's configuration and data processing context.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Netcore NR255-V to the latest patched version. If an update is unavailable, restrict access to the reboot_timer_set.cgi endpoint via network firewall rules. Disable or block external access to this endpoint entirely. Monitor for exploitation attempts and isolate affected devices if compromise is suspected.
