Executive Summary

This is an Incorrect Authorization vulnerability in Apache Syncope. An administrator with permission to update ClientApp cannot perform update operations because the system incorrectly checks the create entitlement for both create and update actions.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves incorrect authorization checks in Apache Syncope. To detect it, verify that users with ClientApp update entitlement cannot perform update operations while users with create entitlement are incorrectly checked for both create and update operations. Check Apache Syncope logs for unauthorized access attempts or failed update operations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with update privileges could be blocked from performing legitimate updates due to incorrect authorization checks. This may lead to denial of service or inability to manage ClientApp configurations properly.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact GDPR or HIPAA compliance as it relates to authorization checks in Apache Syncope. However, improper authorization could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may indirectly affect compliance if such access violates regulatory requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Syncope to version 4.0.8, 4.1.3, or later to fix the incorrect authorization issue affecting ClientApp operations.
