Description

The Product Filter for WooCommerce by WBW plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'wpf_fid' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.4.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. Exploitation requires the crafted request to target a page where a filter using the vulnerable recalculation output is present.

Executive Summary

This is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Product Filter for WooCommerce by WBW WordPress plugin. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'wpf_fid' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts into web pages that execute when a user clicks a crafted link.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Product Filter for WooCommerce plugin up to version 3.4.2. Check for suspicious URLs or scripts in the 'wpf_fid' parameter. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for XSS vulnerabilities. Manually review plugin versions and look for unexpected script injections in pages using product filters.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could trick users into clicking malicious links, leading to arbitrary script execution in their browsers. This could result in session hijacking, defacement of web pages, or theft of sensitive user data like cookies or credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Product Filter for WooCommerce plugin to the latest version beyond 3.4.2. If an update is unavailable, disable or remove the plugin. Implement a web application firewall to block XSS attempts. Monitor for unusual activity and educate users to avoid clicking untrusted links.
