Authentication Bypass via Percent-Encoded Path in Apache DolphinScheduler

Description

An authentication bypass vulnerability exists in the protection of Actuator endpoints. The application determines whether authentication is required by matching the incoming request path against protected Actuator paths. By sending a specially crafted request containing a percent-encoded path, a remote unauthenticated attacker can cause the security check to fail to recognize the request as targeting a protected endpoint. As a result, the attacker may bypass authentication and access otherwise restricted Actuator endpoints. Successful exploitation may expose operational or configuration information and, depending on the enabled endpoints and application configuration, allow access to sensitive management functionality. This issue affects Apache DolphinScheduler: before 3.4.3. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 3.4.3, which fixes the issue.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in Apache DolphinScheduler. It allows remote unauthenticated attackers to access protected Actuator endpoints by sending a specially crafted percent-encoded request path. The security check fails to recognize the request as targeting a protected endpoint, bypassing authentication.

Detection Guidance

Check Apache DolphinScheduler versions before 3.4.3. Inspect logs for unauthorized access attempts to Actuator endpoints. Monitor network traffic for percent-encoded paths targeting /actuator endpoints.

Impact Analysis

Exploitation may expose operational or configuration information. Depending on enabled endpoints and configuration, attackers could gain access to sensitive management functionality, potentially leading to unauthorized system control or data exposure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized access to sensitive management endpoints. If exploited, it may expose operational or configuration information, which could include personal or protected health data if present in the exposed endpoints. Unauthorized access to such data violates confidentiality requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache DolphinScheduler to version 3.4.3 or later immediately. Ensure Actuator endpoints are properly secured and not exposed to untrusted networks. Review and restrict access to management endpoints.
