Executive Summary

The Link Library WordPress plugin before version 7.9.6 has a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It fails to properly escape certain parameters like 'link_tags' and 'link_price' before using them in generated URLs on front-end directory pages. This allows malicious scripts to be injected and executed in the browser of any visitor, including logged-in administrators.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Link Library WordPress plugin. If it is below 7.9.6, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files directly.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to run malicious scripts in your browser when visiting affected pages. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or unauthorized actions on your behalf. Even administrators are at risk, which could compromise the entire WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health data privacy) requirements. Organizations using the vulnerable plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Link Library plugin to version 7.9.6 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin until a patch is applied.
