Description

Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') (CWE-22) in the Kibana Fleet feature can lead to the unauthorized deletion of resources via Path Traversal (CAPEC-126). Executive Summary

CVE-2026-78591 is a Path Traversal vulnerability in Kibana's Fleet feature. It allows a low-privileged user to manipulate file paths in the Fleet administration interface, causing higher-privileged users to unintentionally delete resources, including accounts with elevated privileges.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Kibana instance is running a vulnerable version (8.19.16 or earlier in 8.x, 9.3.5 or earlier in 9.x, or 9.4.0 to 9.4.2). Verify if Fleet is enabled and if multiple users with differing privilege levels have access to Fleet configuration.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized deletion of critical resources such as user accounts, data, or configurations. Attackers with low privileges might trick administrators into performing harmful actions, potentially disrupting operations or compromising system integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Kibana to a patched version: 8.19.17, 9.3.6, or 9.4.3. If upgrading is not possible, disable the Fleet feature as a temporary measure. Ensure only trusted users have access to Fleet configuration.
