Description

Lantronix SLC8000 before firmware v9.7.0.3, EMG8500/EMG7500 before firmware v9.7.0.1, and all firmware versions of SLB882 contain a server-side request forgery vulnerability in the WebSSH/WebTelnet listener that allows unauthenticated attackers to cause the affected device to establish SSH connections to attacker-controlled endpoints. The custom shellinaboxd builds its SSH connection target using a snprintf call with user-supplied input; by supplying an overlong username string an attacker causes the device IP suffix to be truncated, redirecting the resulting connection to an arbitrary host. Attackers can use this capability to enumerate or communicate with internal network endpoints that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Executive Summary

This is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Lantronix devices including SLC8000, EMG8500, EMG7500, and SLB882. It exists in the WebSSH/WebTelnet listener due to improper handling of user input in SSH connection targets. Attackers can exploit this by sending a specially crafted username string that truncates the device IP suffix, redirecting the SSH connection to an arbitrary host controlled by the attacker.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the firmware versions of affected Lantronix devices (SLC8000, EMG8500, EMG7500, SLB882). Affected versions are SLC8000 before v9.7.0.3, EMG8500/EMG7500 before v9.7.0.1, and all SLB882 versions. Inspect WebSSH/WebTelnet listener logs for unusual SSH connection attempts or connections to internal endpoints from these devices.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can use this vulnerability to make the affected device connect to internal network endpoints that are normally inaccessible. This could allow attackers to enumerate internal systems, communicate with restricted services, or exfiltrate data from internal networks. The impact includes potential data breaches, unauthorized access to sensitive systems, and network reconnaissance.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to violations of data protection regulations like GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data or systems. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A successful exploit could result in data breaches, triggering compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage for organizations using these vulnerable devices.

Mitigation Strategies

Update affected Lantronix devices to the latest firmware versions: SLC8000 to v9.7.0.3, EMG8500/EMG7500 to v9.7.0.1. Disable WebSSH/WebTelnet listeners if not required. Restrict network access to these services to trusted sources only.
