Description

Lantronix SLC8000 before firmware v9.7.0.3, EMG8500/EMG7500 before firmware v9.7.0.1, and all firmware versions of SLB882/SLCx-03/SLCx-02 contain a command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated attackers with the services permission to execute arbitrary shell commands as root by exploiting the set script schedule command that passes unsanitized user input to a system() call. Attackers with the services permission can authenticate to the terminal or CLI interface and inject malicious commands through the unsanitized parameter to achieve complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability on the affected device and potentially impact downstream serial-attached devices.

Executive Summary

This is a command injection vulnerability in Lantronix devices including SLC8000, EMG8500, EMG7500, SLB882, SLCx-03, and SLCx-02. It allows authenticated attackers with services permission to execute arbitrary shell commands as root by exploiting the set script schedule command. The vulnerability occurs because user input is passed unsanitized to a system() call.

Detection Guidance

Check if affected devices are running vulnerable firmware versions. For Lantronix SLC8000, verify if firmware is below v9.7.0.3. For EMG8500/EMG7500, check if below v9.7.0.1. All versions of SLB882/SLCx-03/SLCx-02 are vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with services permission can gain root access to the device, leading to complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This could allow full control over the device and potentially impact any serial-attached devices connected to it.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can severely impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to the potential loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of affected devices. Unauthorized root access could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or deletion, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update affected devices to the latest firmware versions: SLC8000 to v9.7.0.3, EMG8500/EMG7500 to v9.7.0.1. Disable or restrict access to the CLI interface for users without a need for services permission.
