Executive Summary

Dell BOSS versions before 2.2.13.2038 have an improper access control flaw in the SMCU on 17G BOSS-N1 controllers. This allows an unauthenticated attacker with physical access to gain unauthorized access through the On-Chip Debug and Test Interface.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires physical access to exploit and is specific to Dell BOSS versions prior to 2.2.13.2038 on 17G BOSS-N1 controllers. Detection involves checking the firmware version of the BOSS controller. Use Dell's OpenManage or iDRAC tools to query the BOSS controller version. If you have physical access, inspect the controller model and firmware version manually.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain unauthorized access to the system, potentially leading to data theft, system manipulation, or further network compromise if physical access is obtained.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR or HIPAA, depending on the data exposed. Organizations must ensure proper access controls to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Dell BOSS firmware to version 2.2.13.2038 or later immediately. Restrict physical access to systems with BOSS controllers. Disable any unnecessary debug interfaces if supported by Dell documentation. Monitor Dell's security advisories for additional guidance.
