Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/smc: fix use-after-free of the LLC qentry in smc_llc_srv_add_link() smc_llc_srv_add_link() keeps add_llc pointing into the queue entry: add_llc = &qentry->msg.add_link; smc_llc.c:1482 ... smc_llc_save_add_link_info(link_new, add_llc); smc_llc.c:1494 smc_llc_flow_qentry_del(&lgr->llc_flow_lcl); smc_llc.c:1495 ... u8 *llc_msg = smc_link_shared_v2_rxbuf(link) ? (u8 *)lgr->wr_rx_buf_v2 : (u8 *)add_llc; smc_llc.c:1504 smc_llc_save_add_link_rkeys(link, link_new, llc_msg); smc_llc.c:1506 smc_llc_flow_qentry_del() kfree()s the entry, so on a link without a shared v2 receive buffer the pointer handed to smc_llc_save_add_link_rkeys() is already freed. Before the Fixes: commit that branch always used lgr->wr_rx_buf_v2 and add_llc was not used after the free. Reproduced on an unpatched tree over rxe, with KASAN, kasan_multi_shot and a link forced to max_recv_sge == 1: the entry is freed and read by the same call, and the freeing frame is smc_llc_srv_add_link() itself. Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's SMC (Socket Messaging Channel) module. It occurs in the function smc_llc_srv_add_link() where a pointer to a freed memory location is used. The issue arises when smc_llc_flow_qentry_del() frees a queue entry but another part of the code still tries to access it via the add_llc pointer. This leads to a memory corruption issue that can cause system crashes or potential privilege escalation.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's SMC (Socket Direct) module and may trigger kernel errors like slab-use-after-free. Detection typically requires kernel debugging tools like KASAN (Kernel Address Sanitizer). Enable KASAN in your kernel and monitor for slab-use-after-free errors in kernel logs. Check for crashes or warnings in smc_llc_srv_add_link() or related SMC functions.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to cause a denial of service by crashing the system. In some cases, it might enable privilege escalation if the attacker can control the freed memory contents. Systems using the SMC protocol for inter-process communication are particularly at risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability is a use-after-free flaw in the Linux kernel's SMC (Socket Messaging Channel) module. It does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it is a low-level system bug rather than a data protection or privacy issue. Compliance risks would only arise if this flaw led to unauthorized data access or system instability in environments handling regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel patches that fix this issue. If you cannot patch immediately, disable the SMC module by blacklisting it or removing SMC-related kernel modules. Monitor kernel logs for crashes or errors related to SMC or LLC queue handling. Restrict network access to services using SMC if possible.
