Improper Authorization in Apache DolphinScheduler Workflow Execution

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-81569, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-09-29

Last updated on: 2026-09-29

Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

An improper authorization vulnerability exists in the handling of sub-workflow tasks. An authenticated user who does not have permission to access a target project can reference and invoke a workflow belonging to that project through a sub-workflow task. The system does not properly verify whether the user has permission to execute the referenced workflow or access its project. As a result, the user can bypass project-level authorization controls and cause workflows in unauthorized projects to be executed. Successful exploitation may allow unauthorized execution of workflow tasks and access to the resources or data available to the target workflow. This issue affects Apache DolphinScheduler: before 3.4.3. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 3.4.3, which fixes the issue.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper authorization issue in Apache DolphinScheduler. It allows an authenticated user without permission to access a project to invoke a workflow from that project through a sub-workflow task. The system fails to verify if the user has the right to execute the workflow or access its project, enabling unauthorized workflow execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the Apache DolphinScheduler version installed on your system. Run commands like 'dolphinscheduler version' or inspect the installation directory for version details. If the version is before 3.4.3, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow unauthorized users to execute workflow tasks and access resources or data within projects they are not permitted to access. It bypasses project-level authorization controls, potentially leading to data breaches or unauthorized system operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements of standards like GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data exposure, unauthorized processing, or breaches of confidentiality, potentially leading to legal penalties or loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache DolphinScheduler to version 3.4.3 or later immediately. Follow the official upgrade instructions provided by Apache to ensure proper installation and configuration.
