Description

The Photo Gallery, Sliders, Proofing and WordPress plugin before 4.5.0 does not correctly validate the extensions of files extracted from an uploaded archive, due to a variable being reused as a loop counter so that the check always passes, allowing users granted its gallery-management capability by an administrator to write arbitrary files into a web-accessible directory and, on hosts that execute them, run arbitrary code.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the NextGEN Gallery WordPress plugin versions before 4.5.0. It allows users with gallery-management permissions to upload a ZIP file containing arbitrary files. Due to a flawed loop counter variable, the plugin fails to validate file extensions properly, letting attackers write files to web-accessible directories and potentially execute malicious code if the server runs them.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the NextGEN Gallery plugin. If it is below 4.5.0, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress or inspect the plugin directory for version details.

Impact Analysis

If you use the NextGEN Gallery plugin before version 4.5.0, an attacker with gallery-management access could upload malicious files to your server. This could lead to unauthorized code execution, website defacement, data theft, or further compromise of your WordPress installation and hosting environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited, especially if sensitive user or patient data is compromised.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the NextGEN Gallery plugin to version 4.5.0 or later immediately. Remove any unauthorized files in web-accessible directories and restrict gallery-management capabilities to trusted users only.
