Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the NextGEN Gallery WordPress plugin before version 4.5.0. It allows authenticated users with only gallery-management capabilities to modify image sizing settings that apply across the entire site. The plugin fails to verify if users have the required options capability before saving these settings.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your WordPress site uses the NextGEN Gallery plugin version prior to 4.5.0. Log in as a user with gallery-management capabilities and attempt to modify image sizing settings. If settings are saved without requiring options capability, the vulnerability is present.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with gallery-management access could change image sizing settings for the whole site, potentially disrupting the appearance or functionality of galleries. This could lead to visual inconsistencies or broken layouts on the website.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the NextGEN Gallery plugin to version 4.5.0 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin until an update is applied. Review user roles and capabilities to ensure only trusted users have gallery-management permissions.
