Memory Exhaustion in MongoDB Server via Malicious $jsonSchema Filter

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-82054, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-09-08

Last updated on: 2026-09-08

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

A security issue exists in MongoDB server's JSON Pointer parser used during $jsonSchema query filter processing. When a find command includes a specially crafted $jsonSchema filter field, the parser processes the input without enforcing adequate limits on iteration count or total allocation size, resulting in significant memory amplification. Under concurrent request load, the cumulative memory consumption can exhaust available heap memory, causing the server's out-of-memory handler to terminate the mongod process and deny service to all connected clients.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in MongoDB's JSON Pointer parser used during $jsonSchema query processing. A specially crafted filter can cause excessive memory usage without proper limits, leading to server crashes under heavy load.

Detection Guidance

Monitor MongoDB server logs for out-of-memory terminations or excessive memory usage during query processing. Check for find commands with $jsonSchema filters containing deeply nested or large JSON structures. Use system monitoring tools like top, htop, or ps to observe mongod process memory consumption spikes under load.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this flaw could cause your MongoDB server to run out of memory and crash, disrupting all connected clients and services relying on the database.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest MongoDB server patch or upgrade to a version where the JSON Pointer parser enforces iteration and allocation limits. Restrict network access to MongoDB instances using firewalls. Limit concurrent client connections to reduce memory amplification risk. Review and sanitize all $jsonSchema filters in queries.
