Incorrect Authorization in Apache Roller OAuth 1.0a Endpoint

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-82378, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Incorrect Authorization in the OAuth 1.0a authorization endpoint of Apache Roller 6.1.5 allows an unauthenticated remote attacker who learns an outstanding request token for a configured site-wide consumer to bind that token to an arbitrary user account, including an administrator, by submitting an unsigned authorization request. The endpoint derives the authorizing identity from a request-supplied value rather than the authenticated session. Only installations that configure an OAuth 1.0a site-wide consumer are affected, and exploitation requires knowledge of one of its outstanding request tokens. Users are recommended to upgrade to Apache Roller 6.1.6 or later, which binds authorization to the logged-in session.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Incorrect Authorization issue in Apache Roller 6.1.5's OAuth 1.0a authorization endpoint. An unauthenticated remote attacker who knows an outstanding request token for a configured site-wide consumer can bind that token to any user account, including an administrator, by submitting an unsigned authorization request. The endpoint incorrectly derives the authorizing identity from a request-supplied value instead of the authenticated session.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Apache Roller instance is running version 6.1.5 or earlier. Verify if an OAuth 1.0a site-wide consumer is configured. Inspect network logs for unsigned OAuth authorization requests that bind tokens to arbitrary user accounts. Look for unusual authorization attempts or session mismatches during OAuth flows.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to gain unauthorized access to user accounts, including administrative accounts, by exploiting a request token. If exploited, attackers could perform actions on behalf of the compromised account, potentially leading to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or further lateral movement within the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized disclosures, or improper access to protected health information or personal data, potentially leading to regulatory penalties and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Roller to version 6.1.6 or later to address the OAuth authorization vulnerability. Ensure the upgrade binds authorization to the logged-in session and prevents token binding to arbitrary accounts.
