Executive Summary

This is a path traversal vulnerability in Contec FX5000, FX4000, and FX3000 series products. It allows an attacker with FTP access to view or modify arbitrary files on the server by exploiting improper path validation.

Detection Guidance

Check if Contec FX5000, FX4000, or FX3000 series devices are exposed to FTP access. Test for path traversal by attempting to access files outside the intended directory using FTP commands like 'CWD ../' or 'RETR ../../etc/passwd'.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could read sensitive files like configuration data or credentials, or alter critical system files, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or service disruption. The high CVSS scores indicate significant risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or health data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable FTP access to Contec devices if not required. If FTP is necessary, restrict access via firewall rules, use strong authentication, and ensure the FTP server is updated to a patched version. Monitor network traffic for suspicious FTP requests.
