Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves the mH-DEVELOPER smart home module using outdated software components. It runs on an unsupported Debian 8 operating system and Node.js v17.0.1, which no longer receive security updates. This leaves the device exposed to known vulnerabilities that attackers could exploit to run arbitrary code, steal data, or disrupt device operations.

Detection Guidance

Detect this vulnerability by checking if your mH-DEVELOPER smart home module runs Debian 8 or Node.js v17.0.1. Use commands like 'cat /etc/os-release' to verify Debian version and 'node -v' to check Node.js version. Inspect firmware version with 'cat /etc/issue' or manufacturer tools.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain control of your smart home device, access sensitive information like passwords or personal data, or cause the device to malfunction, leading to service disruptions. Since the software is outdated, there are no future patches to fix these issues.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may violate compliance requirements under GDPR or HIPAA, as it involves inadequate security measures for protecting sensitive data. Using unsupported software increases the risk of data breaches, which could lead to legal penalties or regulatory fines for failing to maintain proper security controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the firmware to version 3.0.30 or later where components were updated or hardened. If update is not possible, isolate the device from critical networks, disable unnecessary services, and monitor for suspicious activity.
