Executive Summary

This is a denial-of-service (DoS) vulnerability in Oracle Helidon's HTTP/2 server component. It allows an unauthenticated attacker over a network to crash or hang the server repeatedly by sending specially crafted HTTP/2 requests. The impact is limited to availability, meaning no data is stolen or altered.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking if your Helidon version is between 4.0.0 and 4.5.4. Use commands like 'java -jar helidon.jar --version' or inspect dependency files (e.g., pom.xml for Maven) to verify the version. Monitor network traffic for HTTP/2 requests targeting Helidon services.

Impact Analysis

If you use Oracle Helidon versions 4.0.0 to 4.5.4, an attacker could disrupt your web services by causing the server to crash or become unresponsive. This leads to downtime and prevents legitimate users from accessing your applications.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service (DOS) in the Helidon webserver component, leading to system unavailability. Such disruptions could impact compliance with regulations like GDPR (data processing availability) or HIPAA (system reliability for protected health information) by failing to maintain required service levels.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Helidon to a version later than 4.5.4 immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict network access to HTTP/2 ports using firewalls or disable HTTP/2 support in Helidon configurations. Apply patches from Oracle as soon as they are available.
