Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the CoolClock WordPress plugin before version 4.3.8. Users with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts by exploiting improperly escaped skin settings. These scripts execute when the content is viewed.

Detection Guidance

Check if the CoolClock WordPress plugin version is below 4.3.8. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files manually. Look for improperly escaped skin settings in the plugin's code.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. It may also allow defacement of web pages or theft of sensitive data displayed on pages using the plugin.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information integrity and confidentiality if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the CoolClock plugin to version 4.3.8 or later immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if updating is not possible. Restrict contributor-level access to prevent unauthorized script injection.
