Executive Summary

This is a command injection vulnerability in the Cobham SATCOM VSAT7090 Maritime Satellite Router. It exists in the function c_set_reports_decode within the mail-report.sh file, specifically in the JSON parsing component. Attackers can manipulate the sender or recipients arguments to inject and execute arbitrary commands remotely.

Detection Guidance

Detect this vulnerability by checking for unauthorized command execution attempts in logs related to mail-report.sh or JSON parsing in Cobham SATCOM VSAT7090 devices. Monitor network traffic for suspicious input in sender/recipients fields of reports.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the affected device. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, system manipulation, or disruption of satellite communication services. Since the exploit is public, the risk of attack is high.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote command injection via manipulated JSON arguments in the Cobham SATCOM VSAT7090 Maritime Satellite Router. Such unauthorized remote access could lead to data breaches, unauthorized data access, or manipulation, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security).

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Cobham SATCOM VSAT7090 firmware to the latest version. Disable remote access to the mail-report.sh function if possible. Implement network segmentation to isolate affected devices. Monitor for exploitation attempts and block suspicious traffic.
