Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Kirki WordPress plugin versions 6.0.0 to 6.2.5. It allows authenticated users with content-level access to modify the status of collaboration comments left by other users, even on pages they cannot access. This is due to an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) flaw where the plugin fails to verify user permissions before changing comment states.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Kirki plugin version is between 6.0.0 and 6.2.5. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the installed version.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Kirki plugin in versions 6.0.0 to 6.2.5, an attacker with content-level access could alter comments on pages they shouldn't be able to view or edit. This could lead to misinformation, unauthorized changes to public-facing content, or disruption of collaborative workflows.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance by allowing unauthorized modifications to comments, which may include sensitive data. For GDPR, it could lead to unauthorized processing or alteration of personal data. For HIPAA, it might affect the integrity of protected health information if comments contain such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Kirki plugin to version 6.3.0 or later. Disable the plugin if updating is not possible. Review user permissions to ensure only trusted users have content-level access.
