Executive Summary

The EmbedPress WordPress plugin before version 4.6.4 has a vulnerability where an improperly restricted Google Reviews REST route allows any authenticated user with contributor-level access or higher to read the site administrator's email address. WordPress core normally hides this information from contributor roles.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your EmbedPress plugin version is between 4.6.0 and 4.6.3. You can do this by inspecting the plugin files or using WordPress admin panel under Plugins. If you have access to the site, run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress root directory to list installed versions.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability exposes the site administrator's email address to unauthorized users, potentially leading to spam, phishing attacks, or targeted social engineering attempts against the administrator.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability exposes the site administrator's email address to unauthorized users, which could lead to privacy violations under regulations like GDPR or HIPAA. Unauthorized access to personal data such as email addresses may result in non-compliance with data protection requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the EmbedPress plugin to version 4.6.4 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update is applied. Review user roles to ensure no unnecessary contributor-level access exists.
