Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the ipmi-oem tool from FreeIPMI versions before 1.6.19. It occurs in the _get_dell_system_info_idrac_info function when processing the idrac-info subcommand for the dell get-system-info command.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of FreeIPMI installed on your system. Run 'ipmi-oem --version' or 'dpkg -l | grep freeipmi' on Debian-based systems. If the version is below 1.6.19, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using vulnerable systems may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update FreeIPMI to version 1.6.19 or later. Disable the ipmi-oem dell get-system-info command if not required. Monitor network traffic for unusual IPMI activity.
