Description

Path traversal in the CLI client image export and copy functionality in Canonical LXD from 4.0.2 before 4.0.14, 5.0.10, 5.21.8, and 6.10 on all platforms allows a remote malicious or machine-in-the-middle image server to overwrite arbitrary local files and execute code on the client system via a crafted Content-Disposition header filename parameter during unified image export or copy operations into a local directory target.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-86334 is a path traversal vulnerability in Canonical LXD's CLI client affecting versions before 4.0.14, 5.0.10, 5.21.8, and 6.10. It allows a remote malicious image server or man-in-the-middle attacker to overwrite arbitrary local files on a client system by exploiting a crafted Content-Disposition header filename parameter during image export or copy operations.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your LXD client version is below the patched versions (4.0.14, 5.0.10, 5.21.8, 6.10, or 7.3.0). Run 'incus version' or 'lxc version' to check the installed version. If vulnerable, monitor for unexpected file modifications in directories where images are exported or copied.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could overwrite sensitive files like ~/.bashrc with malicious payloads, leading to code execution when you next use the shell. This requires you to run incus image export or copy from an untrusted server, which is a common workflow.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized file overwrites on client systems. Arbitrary file writes via path traversal may expose sensitive data or compromise system integrity, which are key concerns under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade LXD to a patched version (4.0.14, 5.0.10, 5.21.8, 6.10, or 7.3.0 or later). Avoid using 'incus image export' or 'copy' commands with untrusted image servers until patched. Review file permissions and recent modifications in directories where images are stored.
