Assigner: WPScan

Description

The User Registration & Membership WordPress plugin before 5.2.8 does not verify that the visitor requesting its membership confirmation page owns the account named in the request, nor that any registration or purchase has taken place, allowing unauthenticated users to retrieve another user's email address, profile fields, role and membership order details. Exploitation requires the site owner to have added a user smart tag to that page's configurable message, which the shipped default does not contain.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the WordPress plugin 'User Registration & Membership' before version 5.2.8. It allows unauthenticated users to retrieve sensitive user data such as email addresses, profile fields, roles, and membership order details by exploiting a flaw in the membership confirmation page. The plugin fails to verify if the requester owns the account or if a registration or purchase was made.

Detection Guidance

Check if your WordPress site uses the 'User Registration & Membership' plugin version prior to 5.2.8. Inspect the membership confirmation page for user smart tags in configurable messages. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated users can access private user information, leading to privacy breaches. Attackers may collect emails, roles, and order details for phishing, spam, or identity theft. If site owners customized the confirmation page with user smart tags, the risk increases as more data becomes exposed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and other privacy regulations by exposing personal data without consent. Organizations may face fines for non-compliance with data protection requirements. HIPAA-covered entities could risk breaches of protected health information if user roles or details are exposed.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the 'User Registration & Membership' plugin to version 5.2.8 or later. Remove any user smart tags from the membership confirmation page's configurable message if present.
