Description

The Download Manager WordPress plugin before 7.5.6 does not sanitise and escape data submitted through its email-locked download subscription form before outputting it back in an admin page, which could allow unauthenticated attackers to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks against administrators. This affects the commercial Pro edition only; the free Download Manager WordPress plugin before 7.5.6 published under the same slug does not ship the affected feature.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Download Manager WordPress plugin Pro edition before version 7.5.6. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize or escape user input from an email-locked download subscription form before displaying it in an admin page. This allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts that execute when an administrator views the page.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Download Manager Pro plugin version is below 7.5.6 by inspecting the WordPress admin panel or using commands like 'wp plugin list' in WP-CLI. Look for the email-locked download subscription form in the plugin settings.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary scripts in the context of an administrator's session. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or further compromise of the WordPress site. Since it affects admin pages, the risk is higher as administrators have elevated privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by potentially exposing sensitive admin data or allowing unauthorized modifications to the site. GDPR may require breach notification if user data is compromised. HIPAA could be affected if protected health information is exposed through script execution. The exact impact depends on the data processed by the site.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Download Manager Pro plugin to version 7.5.6 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, disable the plugin or remove the email-locked download subscription feature until patched.
