Executive Summary

CVE-2026-86815 is a vulnerability in the BackWPup WordPress plugin versions 5.2.2 through 5.7.4. It involves missing authorization checks on certain REST API routes, allowing users with limited administrator-assigned roles to create and execute backup jobs. This flaw enables the exfiltration of full database backups to attacker-controlled destinations.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the BackWPup plugin. If it is between 5.2.2 and 5.7.4, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run the command: wp plugin list | grep backwpup in the WordPress directory.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with limited admin privileges could exploit this to create and run backup jobs, stealing your full database backup. This could expose sensitive user data, credentials, or other confidential information stored in your WordPress database.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and exfiltration of personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Organizations may face legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the BackWPup plugin to version 5.7.5 or later immediately. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is not possible right away. Review user roles with limited administrator access to ensure they are necessary.
