Executive Summary

This is a vulnerability in Oracle VM VirtualBox version 7.2.16. It allows a high-privileged attacker with local access to cause the software to hang or crash repeatedly, leading to a denial of service (DOS). The attack requires logon to the system running VirtualBox and impacts its availability.

Detection Guidance

Detection of CVE-2026-87283 requires checking the installed version of Oracle VM VirtualBox. If your system runs version 7.2.16, it is vulnerable. Use commands like 'VBoxManage --version' or check installed packages via system package managers (e.g., 'dpkg -l | grep virtualbox' on Debian/Ubuntu or 'rpm -qa | grep VirtualBox' on RHEL-based systems).

No direct exploit commands are provided, but monitoring for crashes or hangs in VirtualBox processes may indicate exploitation attempts.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could disrupt your use of Oracle VM VirtualBox by causing it to become unresponsive or crash frequently. This may lead to loss of access to virtual machines and services running on them.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it only affects the availability of Oracle VM VirtualBox through denial-of-service conditions. Compliance risks would arise only if the vulnerability disrupts systems handling regulated data, but no evidence suggests data exposure or integrity loss.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Oracle VM VirtualBox to the latest version to address the vulnerability. Ensure only trusted users have high privileged access to systems running VirtualBox. Monitor for unusual system hangs or crashes in VirtualBox as potential indicators of exploitation.
