CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in Google Chrome's Printing component. It occurs when a program tries to use memory after it has been freed, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution outside the sandbox. An attacker could exploit this by tricking a user into visiting a specially crafted HTML page, compromising the renderer process.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 153.0.8010.36. To detect it, check your Chrome version by running chrome --version or chrome://version in the browser. If the version is below 153.0.8010.36, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system. This means they might install malware, steal data, or take control of your device. The impact is higher if the attacker has already compromised the renderer process, which handles web content rendering.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code outside the sandbox via a crafted HTML page, which could lead to unauthorized data access or manipulation. Such risks may impact compliance with GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data security) by potentially exposing sensitive information or violating confidentiality requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 153.0.8010.36 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in the Printing component.
