CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in V8, the JavaScript engine used by Google Chrome. It occurs when a program tries to use memory that has already been freed, potentially allowing an attacker who has compromised the renderer process to read memory inside the sandbox through a specially crafted HTML page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome's V8 engine and requires detecting outdated or vulnerable Chrome versions. Check your Chrome version via chrome://version/ and compare it to version 153.0.8010.36 or later. If using Linux, commands like 'google-chrome --version' or 'dpkg -l | grep google-chrome' may help. No direct detection commands exist for this memory corruption issue as it requires sandbox escape analysis.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to read sensitive memory inside the Chrome sandbox. This might lead to information disclosure, such as accessing private data or credentials, but requires the attacker to first compromise the renderer process.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to read memory inside the sandbox via a crafted HTML page, which could potentially expose sensitive data. This may impact compliance with GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) by increasing the risk of unauthorized data access or disclosure.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 153.0.8010.36 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in V8.
