Executive Summary

This is an authentication bypass vulnerability in Apache Syncope where an attacker can spoof another user's privileges by exploiting disclosed JWKS settings for internal JWT authentication. The attacker completes authentication and obtains a valid JWT to gain unauthorized access.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Apache Syncope version is between 3.0.0-M0 and 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 and 4.0.7, or 4.1.0-M0 and 4.1.2. Verify if JWKS settings for internal JWT authentication are exposed. Look for unauthorized privilege escalation attempts after authentication.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could impersonate legitimate users, gain unauthorized access to sensitive data, or perform actions with elevated privileges. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or service disruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) by allowing unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, resulting in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Syncope to version 4.0.8, 4.1.3, or later to address the authentication bypass vulnerability. Ensure JWKS settings are properly secured to prevent disclosure of protocol and key details.
