Executive Summary

This is an OS command injection vulnerability in the WatchGuard AP diagnostic CLI. An authenticated administrator can execute arbitrary operating system commands by providing specially crafted input. The flaw exists in versions of WatchGuard AP greater than or equal to 1.0 but less than 3.4.8.

Detection Guidance

Check WatchGuard AP versions with 'show version' in CLI. If version is >=1.0 and <3.4.8, the system is vulnerable. Look for unusual command execution patterns in logs or unexpected network activity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrative access could run unauthorized commands on the system, potentially leading to full system compromise, data theft, or disruption of services. This could allow further network infiltration or unauthorized modifications.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized command execution on systems handling sensitive data. An authenticated attacker could exploit it to access, modify, or exfiltrate protected information, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements of these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade WatchGuard AP to version 3.4.8 or later immediately. Restrict administrative access to trusted users only. Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity.
