Executive Summary

CVE-2026-87985 is a critical vulnerability in Mistral Vibe where ANSI-C quoted arguments bypass command permission checks. These arguments are not properly inspected, allowing crafted allowlisted commands to execute arbitrary code on the user's system without approval.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if Mistral Vibe versions 2.9.0 or later are installed. Inspect command logs for unusual use of ANSI-C quoted arguments like $'-exec' which may bypass safety checks. Look for unexpected command executions in system logs, especially those involving find predicates such as -exec or -execdir.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to run unauthorized commands on your system with your privileges. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration if the attacker gains control.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, triggering compliance breaches and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Mistral Vibe to a patched version if available. Disable or restrict the use of ANSI-C quoted arguments in command inputs. Review and tighten command permission checks to block dangerous predicates like -exec. Monitor system logs for suspicious command executions and restrict user privileges where possible.
