Improper Input Handling in MongoDB Python Driver GridFS

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-88029, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-09-10

Last updated on: 2026-09-10

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

Improper neutralization of special elements in data query logic in the GridFS component of the MongoDB Python Driver can cause a caller-supplied structured file identifier to be interpreted as a query condition rather than as a literal identifier. An authenticated user who can influence the identifier passed by an affected application may obtain stored file content beyond the intended target or cause all GridFS file chunks in the affected bucket to be removed, rendering stored file content unreadable. The affected rename operation may also rename a stored file other than the intended target.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper handling of special elements in data query logic within MongoDB's GridFS component in the Python Driver. An authenticated user can manipulate a structured file identifier so it is treated as a query condition instead of a literal identifier. This may allow access to unintended file content or deletion of all GridFS file chunks in a bucket, making stored files unreadable. The rename operation could also rename the wrong file.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves improper handling of file identifiers in MongoDB's GridFS component. Detection requires checking for unusual file access patterns or unauthorized modifications to GridFS buckets. Review application logs for suspicious rename or file access operations targeting GridFS. Ensure the MongoDB Python Driver is updated to the latest version to mitigate risks.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with authenticated access could read unauthorized file content or delete critical files, leading to data breaches or loss of important data. Applications using GridFS for file storage may experience unexpected behavior or data corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or deletion of sensitive data, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the MongoDB Python Driver to the latest version that patches this vulnerability. Review applications using GridFS to ensure file identifiers are properly validated and not passed as raw queries. Restrict database user permissions to limit access to GridFS operations.
