Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Simple Membership WordPress plugin before version 4.7.8 allows users to exploit PayPal payment notifications. The plugin does not check if the membership level in the payment matches the configured level for the payment button. This lets attackers pay for a lower-priced membership while receiving a higher-privileged membership level.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the Simple Membership WordPress plugin. If it is below 4.7.8, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files for version details.

Impact Analysis

If you use this plugin, an attacker with Subscriber-level access or higher could escalate their privileges without paying for the higher membership. This could grant unauthorized access to premium features or sensitive data, depending on the membership level they exploit.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's access controls. If exploited, it may result in non-compliance due to improper privilege management and potential data exposure.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Simple Membership plugin to version 4.7.8 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update is applied.
