Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the WPeMatico RSS Feed Fetcher WordPress plugin allows users with contributor-level access or higher to publish posts directly and spoof the author by setting any registered user, including administrators, as the post author through campaign settings. The flaw comes from insufficient verification of user permissions before allowing post publication or author attribution.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the WPeMatico RSS Feed Fetcher plugin. If it is version 2.8.27 or below, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the plugin version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with contributor-level access could publish unauthorized posts under another user's name, including administrators. This could lead to misinformation, reputational damage, or unauthorized content being attributed to trusted users. The vulnerability may also allow unauthorized content to appear on your site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized content publication, potentially violating data integrity and accountability requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. If sensitive content is published under a false author, it may result in compliance breaches related to user consent and data protection.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WPeMatico RSS Feed Fetcher plugin to version 2.8.27 or higher immediately. Restrict contributor-level and higher user permissions to only necessary actions. Review recent posts for unauthorized author changes or live publications.
