Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a command injection flaw in the D-Link DWR-M921 router firmware version 1.1.52. It exists in the /boafrm/formDiskPartition endpoint where user-controlled input in the devicename parameter is directly inserted into shell commands without proper sanitization. Attackers can exploit this by sending crafted HTTP requests to execute arbitrary commands as the root user.

Detection Guidance

Check if your D-Link DWR-M921 router is running firmware version V1.1.52. Send a crafted HTTP POST request to the /boafrm/formDiskPartition endpoint with a manipulated devicename parameter to test for command injection. Use network scanning tools to identify vulnerable devices by checking for open ports and firmware versions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control over the router, execute arbitrary commands, modify system files, or destroy data. Since the router is a network device, compromise could lead to network breaches, interception of traffic, or pivoting to other systems on the local network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Compromised routers may expose protected health information or personal data, resulting in regulatory penalties, loss of trust, and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest firmware update from D-Link if available. Disable remote access to the router's web interface if not required. Implement network segmentation to limit exposure. Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity targeting the /boafrm/formDiskPartition endpoint.
