CWE ID Description
CWE-121 A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function).
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.

Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in GPAC 26.07.0, specifically in the function gf_sg_dom_event_bubble within the MP4Box component. It occurs when processing certain inputs in the scenegraph module, leading to memory corruption. The issue is exploitable only from a local environment.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to GPAC 26.07.0 and affects the MP4Box component. Detection should focus on identifying the vulnerable version of GPAC installed on your system. Check the installed version using commands like 'gpac --version' or 'mp4box -version'. If the version is 26.07.0, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with local access could exploit this to execute arbitrary code or crash the application, potentially leading to denial of service or unauthorized system access. The impact depends on the privileges of the affected process.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GPAC to version abi-16.23 or later. The patch identifier is 9eb40df4448b88d6a6ce3454657c06f47eff0b24. Remove or restrict access to the MP4Box component if upgrading is not immediately possible. Ensure the vulnerable version is not exposed to untrusted networks or users.
