Executive Summary

This is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in PHPGurukul Daily Expense Tracker System 1.1. It exists in files like sidebar.php where user input (FullName) is rendered without proper encoding. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute in browsers of authenticated users when viewing affected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this XSS vulnerability, inspect the PHPGurukul Daily Expense Tracker System 1.1 for user-supplied data rendered without proper encoding in files like sidebar.php, manage-expense.php, and user-profile.php. Check for unescaped output of the FullName argument or other user inputs in HTML responses.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, and unauthorized actions. Attackers can steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of users, or inject malicious scripts that execute when users view certain pages like the sidebar or expense management.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing user data through session hijacking or credential theft. For HIPAA, it may risk unauthorized access to sensitive financial or personal health-related data stored in the expense tracker. Both standards require protection against such breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply htmlspecialchars() to all user-supplied data before output. Implement Content Security Policy headers. Set HttpOnly and Secure flags on session cookies. Review and sanitize database inputs to prevent stored XSS payloads.
