Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WordPress plugin 'Subscribe Forms' versions 1.4.1 to 1.6.2. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize and escape a form setting called 'Attention Effect.' Authenticated users with Author role or higher can inject malicious scripts into the plugin's output.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the Subscribe Forms plugin. If it is between 1.4.1 and 1.6.2, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

When a page with the affected form is viewed, the injected script executes in the visitor's browser. This can affect anyone viewing the page, including logged-out users and administrators. The impact includes potential theft of session cookies, defacement of the website, or redirection to malicious sites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, which may violate GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. Organizations using the vulnerable plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Subscribe Forms plugin to version 1.6.3 or later. Remove or disable the plugin if updating is not possible. Review user roles to ensure only trusted users have Author or higher permissions.
