Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a local privilege escalation flaw in NetworkManager-vpnc, a VPN plugin. A local unprivileged user can inject a newline character into the CA-File path, tricking the system into executing arbitrary commands as root.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check for NetworkManager-vpnc installations and inspect CA-File paths for newline characters. Commands like 'rpm -qa | grep networkmanager-vpnc' or 'dpkg -l | grep networkmanager-vpnc' can verify package presence. Review configuration files in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ for suspicious CA-File entries.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows an attacker with local access to gain root privileges on the system. This could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or unauthorized system modifications.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements that mandate strict access controls and data protection, such as GDPR or HIPAA. Unauthorized root access may lead to data breaches or loss of audit integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Update NetworkManager-vpnc to the latest patched version immediately. Restrict local user access to configuration files and avoid running NetworkManager as root. Monitor system logs for unusual command executions or privilege escalation attempts.
