Description

The ReactPress – Create React App for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'permalink' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.4.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is possible because the permalink parameter is only passed through sanitize_url(), which does not prevent fetching attacker-controlled remote URLs whose response body β€” including script tags and event-handler attributes β€” is written verbatim to disk via file_put_contents().

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the ReactPress plugin for WordPress. It occurs because the 'permalink' parameter is not properly sanitized before being stored. Attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into web pages. These scripts execute when other users view the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the ReactPress plugin for unauthorized script injections in the permalink parameter. Check for suspicious URLs or scripts in stored permalinks. Use WordPress admin access logs to identify unauthorized changes made by subscriber-level users or above.

Impact Analysis

If you use the ReactPress plugin, attackers could steal your cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. They might also redirect you to malicious sites or perform actions on your behalf without consent. This requires only subscriber-level access, making it easier for attackers to exploit.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. If exploited, it may result in unauthorized access to personal or health information, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the ReactPress plugin to the latest version beyond 3.4.0. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily. Review all permalinks and remove any unauthorized scripts. Implement stricter user role permissions to limit subscriber-level access to sensitive functions.
