Description

The HT Contact Form – Drag & Drop Form Builder for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via 'form_data' Rich Text Field via Draft Save/Resume in all versions up to, and including, 2.10.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires tricking a user into clicking an attacker-supplied draft resume URL, which the attacker constructs using the draft_key and access_token returned directly in the save response.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the HT Contact Form WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages via the 'form_data' Rich Text Field when saving or resuming a draft. The injected scripts execute when users access the compromised page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting in the HT Contact Form WordPress plugin. Detection requires checking for vulnerable plugin versions (up to 2.10.1) and inspecting saved form drafts for malicious scripts in the 'form_data' Rich Text Field. No direct network commands detect this; manual review of plugin files and database entries is needed.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick you into clicking a malicious draft resume URL, leading to execution of arbitrary web scripts in your browser. This could result in theft of session cookies, account takeover, or defacement of your WordPress site. Users visiting infected pages may have their data compromised.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, triggering mandatory breach notifications and potential fines under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the HT Contact Form plugin to the latest version beyond 2.10.1. If an update is unavailable, disable or remove the plugin. Review saved drafts for suspicious scripts and remove any unauthorized content. Monitor user activity for unexpected script executions.
