Weak Authentication in LiteLLM via Unverified JWT Email Fallback

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-93355, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

LiteLLM contains a weak authentication vulnerability that allows an attacker holding a valid JWT from the configured identity provider to authenticate as any existing user by exploiting an email-based fallback lookup in the JWT authentication flow without verifying the email_verified claim. Attackers can present a token with an unverified email address matching a victim's account to inherit the victim's role, including proxy_admin privileges, and permanently overwrite the victim's stored identity binding to retain persistent unauthorized access to administrative endpoints exposing API keys and user management.

Executive Summary

LiteLLM has a weak authentication vulnerability where attackers with a valid JWT can impersonate any user by exploiting an email-based fallback lookup. The system fails to verify the email_verified claim in the token, allowing attackers to present a token with an unverified email matching a victim's account. This grants the attacker the victim's role, including admin privileges, and enables unauthorized access to administrative endpoints and persistent account takeover.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect LiteLLM logs for JWT authentication attempts where the email_verified claim is missing or unverified. Check for multiple successful logins with the same JWT but different user roles or email mismatches. Review admin endpoint access logs for unauthorized persistent sessions.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can gain unauthorized access to administrative functions, steal API keys, and take over user accounts permanently. This includes inheriting admin privileges to manage user access, spending controls, and LLM API configurations. The impact ranges from data breaches to financial losses and unauthorized resource usage.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for data protection and access control. It enables unauthorized access to sensitive data and administrative functions, which could lead to breaches of GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's access control rules. Organizations using LiteLLM may face regulatory penalties and loss of compliance certifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update LiteLLM to the latest version beyond 1.102.1 or the specified commit to patch the vulnerability. Review all active JWT tokens for suspicious activity, particularly those with admin privileges. Disable any accounts or tokens that may have been compromised. Monitor administrative endpoints for unauthorized access attempts.
