Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a denial of service flaw in IBM WebSphere Application Server versions 9.0 and 8.5. A remote attacker can send a specially crafted HTTP request to an administrative endpoint, causing the server to exhaust filesystem space and disrupt service availability.

Detection Guidance

Monitor filesystem usage on WebSphere Application Server hosts, particularly in directories where logs or temporary files are stored. Check for unusual HTTP requests targeting administrative endpoints by reviewing web server access logs for patterns like repeated requests to /admin or similar paths.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows an attacker to crash or severely degrade the performance of the WebSphere Application Server by consuming all available filesystem space. This can lead to service outages, downtime, and potential loss of access to critical applications relying on the server.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the recommended Fix Packs: upgrade to WebSphere Application Server 9.0.5.29 or later, or 8.5.5.31 or later. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict network access to administrative endpoints using firewalls or network segmentation.
