Meanwhile the memory of the @name is only 255 byte sized, this will cause out-of-boundary access, and cause the above crash. [FIX] Add extra namelen verification for INODE_REF, just like what we have done in ROOT_REF checks. Now the crafted image can be rejected gracefully: BTRFS critical (device dm-2): corrupt leaf: root=5 block=30572544 slot=14 ino=259, invalid inode ref name length, has 4096 expect [1, 255] BTRFS error (device dm-2): read time tree block corruption detected on logical 30572544 mirror 2 [ Rebase, add a Link: tag, add an simple cause analyze ]

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel's btrfs filesystem involves a crafted image that exploits a flaw in the INODE_REF item's name length validation. The crafted image contains an INODE_REF with a name length of 4096, far exceeding the normal limit of 255. This causes an out-of-bounds memory access during filesystem operations, leading to a kernel crash or panic.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's btrfs filesystem and requires examining btrfs filesystem structures. Use btrfs filesystem check commands like 'btrfs check --readonly' on affected filesystems to detect corruption. Monitor kernel logs for BTRFS corruption messages indicating invalid inode ref name length.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can cause a denial-of-service by crashing the system. An attacker could create a maliciously crafted btrfs filesystem image that triggers the flaw, leading to kernel panic and system unavailability. It does not appear to allow arbitrary code execution or data theft.

Mitigation Strategies

Update your Linux kernel to the latest patched version that includes the fix for this btrfs INODE_REF validation. Avoid mounting or using untrusted btrfs images. If you suspect exposure, run 'btrfs check' on affected filesystems and check kernel logs for crash patterns described in the vulnerability details.
