Description

A vulnerability was found in BioStar BIOS Update Utility 1.9.7.3. This issue affects the function sub_110BC of the file BSMEM64_W10.sys of the component IOCTL Handler. The manipulation of the argument PhysicalAddress/Size results in write-what-where condition. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploit has been made public and could be used. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way.

CWE ID Description
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.
CWE-123 Any condition where the attacker has the ability to write an arbitrary value to an arbitrary location, often as the result of a buffer overflow.

Executive Summary

This is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in BioStar BIOS Update Utility 1.9.7.3. It exists in the IOCTL handler function sub_110BC of the BSMEM64_W10.sys driver. The flaw allows attackers to manipulate PhysicalAddress and Size arguments, creating a write-what-where condition. This enables arbitrary memory writes, potentially leading to full system compromise.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires local access and involves a write-what-where condition in the BSMEM64_W10.sys driver. Detection may involve checking for suspicious driver activity or unauthorized memory writes. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker with local access to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This could lead to complete system takeover, data theft, installation of malware, or bypassing security controls. The public exploit availability increases the risk of real-world attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediate mitigation steps include removing or disabling the BioStar BIOS Update Utility 1.9.7.3, especially the BSMEM64_W10.sys driver. Restrict local access to systems running this utility and monitor for unusual activity. Contact the vendor for updates or patches if available.
