Description

A flaw was found in the authentication session management of Keycloak, an identity and access management solution. The issue occurs when an administrator enforces a stronger authentication flow, such as mandatory two-factor authentication (2FA) setup, through a client policy. A user can bypass this requirement by manually visiting a specific session restart web link during the login process. This action clears the internal markers that track the required security steps, allowing the user to log in with only a password and gain access without completing the mandated 2FA setup.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in Keycloak, an identity management system. It allows users to bypass enforced two-factor authentication (2FA) by visiting a specific session restart link during login. This clears internal tracking markers, letting users log in with just a password instead of completing the required 2FA setup.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability cannot be directly detected through standard network or system commands as it involves a bypass in Keycloak's authentication flow. Monitor Keycloak logs for unusual session restart events or failed 2FA enforcement attempts. Check for users logging in without completing 2FA setup despite policies requiring it.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this flaw lets an attacker bypass mandatory 2FA setup and gain access with just a password. This could allow unauthorized access to protected resources if the server enforces 2FA but the user bypasses it via the session restart link.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with standards requiring strong authentication, such as GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security rule, by allowing unauthorized access without completing mandatory 2FA. However, the specific impact depends on the organization's configuration and enforcement of these controls.

Mitigation Strategies

No mitigation is currently available that meets Red Hat's criteria for ease of use, deployment, applicability, or stability. Monitor official Keycloak updates for patches.
